Design and Build Quality

My initial impression with the Tomzon D65 drone was how it looks like a DJI Mavic Air 2 clone. If you have been wanting to get your hands on the premium-graded drone but couldn’t because the price tag is too high. The Tomzon D65 is a good drone alternative because it follows similar design and framework. This foldable camera drone is built with durable ABS plastic that provides superior durability against crashes and rough impacts.

Additionally, each motor arm is foldable. Which can be extended inwards and outwards to maximize storage space for traveling. Each motor arms are equipped with brushless motors that provide smooth and reliable flight controls for flying. The 4K UHD camera is located at the front which allows you to capture stunning aerial shots and videos.

A single battery gives up to 20 minutes of flight time. Inside the package, you will get two batteries which brings the total flight time to 40 minutes. To power on this foldable camera drone, simply push the power button which is located on the top of the flight battery. You will be able to see the battery indicator status which tells you how much juice it has left remaining.

During the flight operations, the drone will keep you updated based on visual positioning. Which actually are the built-in LED lights surrounding the drone. Overall, this camera drone strikes a perfect balance on portability, compact, ease of use and durability. A big thumbs up from me.

Flight Performance

Whenever you are checking out a drone, we often ask ourselves how well a drone performs when flying. In general, you will want to know how long this quadcopter can stay airborne, how it handles wind factors, is it easy to fly and what is the maximum flight range. The Tomzon D65 is a big brother to the Tomzon D25 drone which means you can expect longer flight time, flight range and performance as well.

Tomzon D65 Smart Camera Drone

As mentioned before, a single battery provides up to 20 minutes of flight time. Which is actually much longer compared to other camera drones in the same price range like Snaptain SP500 and Ruko U11 for example. The Tomzon D65 drone can be flown as far as 350 meters away from the home point. This gives beginners and recreational remote pilots plenty of flying space to soar around.

One of major flight performance upgrades is the brushless motors which makes an impact on power consumption and delivering better flight experience for beginners. The brushless motors generate high revolution per minute (RPM) on magnetic fields that do not cause any friction. In contrast, toy drones like DEERC D20 and Sanrock U52 use brushed motors that generate friction, resulting in lower flight performance. The brushless motors give the Tomzon D65 drone a flight performance advantage.

Controllability

In the next part of the Tomzon D65 review, we are going to talk about flight controls for this camera drone. If you are a beginner and have never flown a drone before. Do not worry about that because the Tomzon D65 comes with a built-in GPS module. The GPS module eliminates the need to maintain stability manually. Instead, the GPS module automatically obtains data from the satellites to provide precise positioning.

Tomzon D65 Drone Remote Controller

The remote controller is simple, straightforward and super easy to use. All of the buttons come with an inscription on it that tells you what they are. To pilot the Tomzon D65 drone, simply push the movement lever. To rotate, adjust altitude level and perform aerial maneuvers, use the left lever. If you want to view real-time video, you can mount your smartphone on the remote controller.

As I mentioned before, the Tomzon D65 drone is equipped with a 4K UHD camera. Which is actually pretty darn good considering the price range and quality of design. The Tomzon D65 drone’s camera is actually nowhere close to Holy Stone HS510 and the more advanced camera drones like Phantom 4 Pro. Still, you can adjust the camera remotely on Tomzon D65 drone which gives you the ability to shift aerial perspective with ease.

Features

Even this DJI Mavic Air 2 clone is packed with tons of features, mainly to GPS integration. The drone comes with intelligent flight mode capabilities from Follow Me Mode, TapFly Mode, Gesture Mode, and Orbit Mode. This gives beginners a wide degree of ability to soar the drone autonomously without the need of a pilot’s input — which is actually pretty darn awesome.

If this is going to be your first time flying a drone, I highly recommend you to go into Headless Mode. This mode switches the flight controls based on the remote controller from the drone. Instead of flying in the direction that the drone heads in, the drone flies based on the direction you are pushing the movement lever at. This will help beginners learn the basics of flight controls.

Tomzon D65 Camera Drone Review

By default, the Tomzon D65 drone comes at the slowest speed setting. This is done to help smoothen the learning curve so that beginners can learn how to fly. Once you master the basics, you can adjust the speed settings to further develop and hone your piloting skill. In addition to that, the camera can be tweaked remotely thanks to the GPS module.

For those beginners who are curious to learn whether the Tomzon D65 drone has safety features. This foldable camera drone has built-in low battery warning, out of range warning, Smart Return to Home (RTH) function, and of course, an optical flow system that automatically measures air pressure for stability. Overall, the Tomzon D65 is a packed drone.

Conclusion

As I wrap up our in-depth Tomzon D65 review, this is definitely one of the best camera drones for beginners. With a flight time of 20 minutes, a good remote control distance up to 350 meters, and intelligent flight modes that lets you command the drone to perform autonomously. 1. Video capture is at two resolutions simultaneously: to-the-phone via WiFi is 720P, but any onboard capture to an optional SD card is 1080P. (Source: received one of these as an Xmas gift and have been testing select features while waiting for good weather for a first flight.)
