Hello and welcome to my Syma X500 drone review. If you are thinking of getting one of these smart camera drones, then you have come to the right place. Because in my Syma X500 drone review, I am going to guide you through all the details that you need to know about this camera drone. As drones are becoming more and more popular, especially mid-range quadcopters such as Holy Stone HS720E, Eachine EX4 and DEERC D15.
Beginners and recreational remote pilots are finding out that it is easy to fly a smart camera drone like the Syma X500 quadcopter. In fact, a GPS-based drone makes the whole flight experience absolutely breeze and simple. A beginner with no prior aviation experience will have an easy time learning how to fly a bird. Which is why I created an in-depth Syma X500 drone review to help you make an informed decision.
Syma is one of the oldest drone manufacturers and they have been crafting high-quality drones. So it is not surprising that they recently launched a brand new foldable camera drone that looks like a DJI Mavic Air 2 clone, the Syma X500 drone. Stick around with us to find out if this is the best smart camera drone just for you.
Syma X500 Drone: Package Contents
Before you buy one of these drones, first thing comes first. You need to know what comes inside the package. Sometimes you will need to buy additional things like extra batteries and such. Luckily, the Syma X500 drone is a complete package which means you can fly it right out of the box. Plus in the box there are two batteries which doubles the total flight time. The only thing I highly recommend purchasing along with the Syma X500 drone is a 64GB micro SD card.
Here’s a list of what is included in the package:
- 1 x Syma X500 Drone
- 1 x Transmitter
- 2 x Drone Batteries
- 1 x Carrying Case
- 1 x USB Charging Cable for Drone
- 1 x USB Charging Cable for Transmitter
- 4 x Spare Propeller
- 1 x Screwdriver
Syma X500 Drone: Build and Design Quality
At first glance, the Syma X500 drone looks like a DJI Mavic Pro clone. It features a similar design and body framework that encompasses durable and thick ABS plastic which provides superior protection against rough impacts and crashes. The motor arms are foldable which extends the total body size dimension to 14.17 x 11.81 x 2.76 inches with propeller guards. The propellers also are foldable, which utilizes aerofoil technology and is super easy to replace the damaged ones.
One thing I liked the most about the Syma X500 drone is how modern and modularized the design is. For instance, you can power on the drone by simply pushing the button and hold for 3 seconds. Then you will see the battery LED lights activating on. The battery indicator status also informs you how much juice is left inside the battery. Which is always nice to know.
A single battery provides up to 26 minutes of flight time. At the price tag that the Syma X500 drone is going for, that’s definitely a lot of flight time. In fact, this drone easily beat some of the popular quadcopters like the Contixo F30 and Tomzon D30. If being able to fly a drone with a long flight time is what you are looking for, the Syma X500 drone is a very good pick. Additionally, the Syma X500 drone is equipped with a 4K UHD camera that’s located in the front. Overall the build and design quality of this drone is solid.
Syma X500 Drone: Flight Performance
In the next part of our Syma X500 drone review, we are going to talk about this drone’s flight performance. When it comes to shopping for one of these drones, you will want to know how easy it is to fly them. Also for beginners, you will want to know whether they are a good performer or not. In general, smart camera drones like the Syma X500 drone are equipped with built-in GPS modules that eliminates majority of manual flight controls.
Since the Syma X500 drone can maintain precise positioning thanks to the GPS module and Optical Flow system. Flying this drone is absolutely simple, precise and easy that a beginner can learn how to fly regardless of their flight experience. The only downside is that the Syma X500 drone isn’t equipped with brushless motors. Though, that’s to compensate for longer flight time and modularized battery that is designed to deliver power more effectively for higher flight performance.
This smart camera drone weights around 206 grams which makes it quite a strong performer against light and moderate winds. Additionally, the Syma X500 drone has a maximum flight range up to 350 meters. Which gives you plenty of airspace to soar the drone around and to get maximum enjoyment thanks to its incredible remote capabilities.
Syma X500 Drone: Camera Quality
All aerial photographers start somewhere. For me, I started with a Sanrock U52 drone which is a toy quadcopter with a built-in camera. It doesn’t have GPS capability that the Syma X500 drone does. However, if you want to learn how to become an aerial photographer, this is a good drone to start with before you plan to buy one of these premium drones such as Mavic Mini, Xiaomi FIMI X8SE or Mavic Air 2.
The camera quality of the Syma X500 drone is equipped with a 4K UHD camera. It can capture 4K UHD stills with ease thanks to built-in electronic imaging stabilization. Although, it’s easy to be excited over the fact that this drone has 4K UHD camera capabilities. I do want to point out that the Syma X500 drone can record videos, but only in 1080P HD resolution quality.
That’s actually not bad at all because that’s the expected camera quality for a drone at this price range. Beginners and recreational remote pilots also can adjust the direction of the camera remotely, thanks to the built-in GPS module. The level of camera quality that the Syma X500 drone brings to the table is decent. It’s a great drone for learning how to master the basics of aerial photography.
Syma X500 Drone: Features
In the next section of our Syma X500 drone review, we are going to share the features that this quadcopter has to offer. At first look, this camera drone is compact, portable and small that doesn’t seem like it has a lot to offer. But as drones are evolving, they are getting smaller and smarter. Which means the Syma X500 drone is actually packed with tons of features that will keep you busy for many hours to come.
Thanks to GPS integration, the Syma X500 drone can perform intelligent flight modes. Set this drone on follow anywhere you go using Follow Me Mode. If you want to make 360-degree videos, simply select Orbit Mode and pick an object you want to capture. You also can command this camera drone using a remote controller, smartphone or Gesture Mode.
If it is your first time flying a drone, the Syma X500 drone comes with speed setting. By default, this drone will be set to slow speed so that you can learn the rope. Once you master the basics, you can adjust the speed setting to experience full force. This foldable quadcopter is also smart enough to return to home if you ever lose sight of it. To recall, simply push Smart Return to Home and it will fly several meters up, then in a straight direct line to the home point.
Lastly, the remote controller does not need AA batteries at all. In fact, you can simply recharge the remote controller the same way you charge drone batteries. This takes the Syma X500 drone on a whole new level of features and flexibility. If you want to access more features like capture photos and record videos, simply insert your smartphone on the remote controller mount.
Syma X500 Drone: Remote Controller
Lastly, we are going to talk about the remote controller that the Syma X500 drone uses. My initial impression with the Syma X500 transmitter is that it is made with high-quality ABS plastic. Which provides exceptional durability and features built-in foldable handle grips for added support. At the same time, the Syma X500 transmitter comes with a mount holder that you can insert your smartphone onto.
Personally, I liked how Syma designed a remote controller for beginners and recreational remote pilots in mind. The Syma X500 transmitter is also foldable and compact which makes it super easy to fold and take with wherever you go. The remote controller user interface is simple enough that doesn’t have a lot of buttons on it. Which makes it super easy for beginners to fly the drone without having to spend too much time learning each button on the remote controller.
Both control sticks are used to command the drone’s flight direction, including altitude height level and to rotate the drone. The buttons on the remote controller are flight functions. They provide you quick tap to perform Smart Return to Home, Altitude Mode and even Headless Mode. Overall, the remote controller is solid, yet it maintains simplistic focus.
