DJI Mini 2 Review: Super Portable, Compact, and 4K UHD Flycam Drone

Hi and welcome to my DJI Mini 2 review — one of the best, super portable and compact 4K UHD flycam drones for beginners. This brand new drone is actually called DJI Mini 2 (not Mavic Mini 2). DJI CEO and founder, Frank Wang, has long complained about how he was not happy with the level of quality that Mavic Mini drone delivers. Mainly with the camera specifications as it only can record 2.7K HD resolution quality.

Now that the DJI Mini 2 drone is out, there’s so many reasons why you should buy this flycam quadcopter right now. In fact, several remote pilots are incredibly pleased with this mini-sized foldable camera drone. If you are already flying big drones such as Mavic Pro, Holy Stone HS720E or Autel EVO 2. Then you probably will want to make the switch right now. Because with DJI Mini 2 drone you do not need to register it with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at all.

It is so lightweight and compact, yet it comes with tons of upgrades and features that makes the drone totally worth buying. But first, you need to know what the DJI Mini 2 drone has to offer. Which is why I created an in-depth DJI Mini 2 drone review to guide you through all the details from build & design quality to camera quality to features. That being said, is the DJI Mini 2 drone a perfect choice for you?

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Package Contents

Before we dive deep in the DJI Mini 2 review, let’s talk about what is included in the package first. I think it is important that everyone knows what to expect inside the package and see what else is needed to get the complete flight experience. The DJI Mini 2 is a standalone drone which means you will have everything you need to start flying. However, I recommend purchasing a 128GB micro SD card and some drone batteries to go with the Mini 2.

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Design and Build Quality

At first glance, the Mini 2 drone is expertly crafted. It is made with high-quality aluminum material which provides the drone superior protection against impacts and crashes. This is a great design feature because if you are a beginner and it is your first time flying the drone, you will make a few stumbles along the way. But fear not, the DJI Mini 2 drone is incredibly resilient enough to withstand on its own.

DJI Mini 2 Folded and Unfolded

This flycam drone has a total size dimension of 55 x 32 x 22 cm when folded. Which makes it incredibly portable. You can easily store it inside your jacket pocket, traveling case or backpack. Thanks to lightweight design, this drone only weighs 249 grams or 0.549 lbs that will not bog you down at all. Plus, you do not need to register DJI Mini 2 drone with the FAA at all — an ultimate traveler’s dream for flying the quadcopter around the world legally.

In the front, the drone is equipped with an upgraded 4K UHD camera. Each motor arms are outfitted with brushless motors for enhanced flight performance. In the back, you can easily replace an intelligent flight battery. A single battery provides up to 31 minutes of flight time (one minute longer compared to the original Mavic Mini drone). Lastly, there’s a built-in obstacle avoidance sensor on the bottom which helps the drone detect ground to allow smooth and gentle landing. Overall, the design and build quality of DJI Mini 2 drone is exceptional.

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Flight Performance

In the next part of our in-depth DJI Mini 2 review, we are going to talk about this flycam drone’s flight performance. There’s several major upgrades to this drone’s flight performance in terms of flight speed, flight range and flight time. Starting with the flight speed, the DJI Mini 2 drone can achieve a maximum flying speed of 36 miles per hour. Compared to the Mavic Mini drone which only has a maximum flight speed of 29 miles per hour. Thus, the DJI Mini 2 flight speed has improved greatly which gives it an impressive capability to resist up to wind speed level 5.

DJI Mini 2 Flight Performance

Another major flight performance improvement is range extension. Thanks to built-in OcuSync integration — a range extension design feature that was introduced to the Mavic drones only — the flight range of DJI Mini 2 drone increased to 6.2 miles. That is around two and half times bigger compared to the original Mavic Mini. Furthermore, the OcuSync transmits strong signals that ensures a reliable and stable connection even in high-density cities with heavy Wi-Fi signals.

As I mentioned before, a single battery provides up to 31 minutes of flight time. For some of the remote pilots, an extra minute to total flight time might not sound like a big deal. But 31 minutes of flight time means the DJI Mini 2 drone can stay airborne for a longer time in addition to its improved flight speed and range means you can explore much more. The DJI Mini 2 drone still keeps the same, simple and easy to learn flight controls for beginners and now professional remote pilots.

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Camera Quality

Here’s why you should buy DJI Mini 2 drone, it has one of the best camera quality. If you are already flying big drones such as Holy Stone HS720E and Potensic D68, it’s time to make the switch now. Sure, the DJI Mini 2 drone is listed as one of the best smart camera drones, but the quality of shots that it delivers is uncontested. This little bird comes with a built-in camera that can capture stills and record videos in true 4K UHD resolution quality. It records videos with an impressive 100MB/S bitrate for best viewing experience.

DJI Mini 2 Review

The camera features a 1.2/3″ CMOS sensor that does an awesome job at capturing every tiny detail of vibrant color and integrating lighting quality to create an everlasting masterpiece. If you are a professional remote pilot, you will be pleased with the fact that the DJI Mini 2 drone is capable of producing both JPEG and RAW format files. The camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer that can adjust aerial perspective in roll, yaw and pitch direction.

It also helps keep the camera leveled and steady throughout the entire flight. Which maintains professional quality that your audience base will crave for when checking out your work on YouTube and other social media platforms. Lastly, you can take advantage of Hyperlapse Mode and Panorama Mode, which is what the Mavic Mini lacks. All of these awesome features and exceptional camera quality is what makes the DJI Mavic Mini 2 one of the best mini drones for beginners.

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Features

Our in-depth DJI Mini 2 review isn’t completed without talking about how this drone is chock-full of features. This foldable, portable, compact drone comes with an impressive array of intelligent flight modes. Choose from the following modes to customize your own flight experience: Follow Me Mode, Orbit Mode, Waypoint Mode, Gesture Mode, TapFly Mode, Helix Mode, Rocket Mode, Boomerang and Asteroid Mode. With a built-in OcuSync range extender system, the DJI Mini 2 can soar up to 6.2 miles and embrace the Hyperlapse + Panorama modes to elevate your footage quality.

DJI Mini 2 Drone Features

If you are a beginner and you want a drone that’s safe enough to fly. The DJI Mini 2 is the perfect drone because it is equipped with a numerous set of features. First of all, it is equipped with an obstacle avoidance sensor on the bottom which can detect if there’s someone walking underneath it. Plus, it also provides a safe and gentle landing that protects the drone. If you ever lose sight of the drone, don’t worry about that. The DJI Mini 2 drone comes with a remote controller which lets you track its location and simply recall using the Smart Return to Home button.

Whenever you are flying this little bird, you will have access to a number of real-time warning systems such as Wind Velocity that let you know if it is too strong for the DJI Mini 2 drone to handle. Plus you can stay in the loop of how much drone battery it has left so that you can plan the flight route ahead of time. Along with these features, you will have the ability to switch to Sports Mode to experience true and exciting flight performance that the DJI Mini 2 is capable of.

DJI Mini 2 Drone: Remote Controller

If you have flown or own DJI Mavic Air 2 drone, you will see that the DJI Mini 2 drone uses the same remote controller. While there’s no differences between these two drones in term of using the remote controller. DJI has done a great job delivering a remote controller that’s simple, easy and innovative for beginners to use. At the same time, it is still professional enough for avid drone photographers and travelers to use.

DJI Mini 2 Remote Controller

The DJI Mini 2 remote controller can last for up to 4 – 5 hours on a single battery charge. It takes roughly 2 hours to recharge the remote controller battery. This remote controller also comes with a built-in mount holder that is located on the top, instead of bottom as seen in other DJI drones. Personally, I like this design change because that makes it easier to see the screen closer to the skies. The mount holder grip is also much stronger and can support big phones such as iPhone 12.

While the DJI Mini 2 remote controller do not have any built-in LCD screen that keeps you informed of flight speed, altitude level, flight mode and such (unless you use smartphone with the remote controller). You still can take advantage of the ability to customize your personal DJI Mini 2 remote controller through connecting to the DJI Go 4 App on the smartphone for intelligent flight modes or effects of your own liking.

DJI Mini 2 Drone and DJI Mavic Mini: What’s The Differences?

As I mentioned before about how the DJI CEO founder wasn’t too happy about the level of quality that the DJI Mavic Mini offered. It was more than enough that he told the DJI engineers to build an upgraded version of the original model, which became known as the Mini 2 drone. If you have seen the original DJI Mavic Mini, but you aren’t sure what’s the differences between these two drones. Read my in-depth DJI Mavic Mini vs DJI Mini 2 comparison guide to learn more.

DJI Mavic Mini vs DJI Mini 2

The DJI Mini 2 drone comes with several upgrades such as longer flight time up to 31 minutes, extended flight range up to 6.2 miles thanks to built-in OcuSync 2.0 transmission system, and higher maximum flight speed up to 36 miles per hour. There’s just so many upgrades that will definitely give you a pause when you check out other drones that have the same features, but at a higher price tag.

The only main difference between these two drones: DJI Mavic Mini and Mini 2 is the camera quality. It is the definite feature and the true reason why the DJI CEO & Founder wanted to have a better camera drone designed to meet everyone’s needs like beginners, travelers, and professionals while complying to the international aviation regulations and rules.
